The First Month of Being a Podcast Host
We are at month 12 of 12 for 2022 already – which means 2023 is right around the corner, holidays are ramping up, and the cold is settling in.
When you’re a kid everything feels long – from the seconds of a minute, to the hours in a school day, to the weeks leading up to Winter Break. As an adult, every minute is becoming more and more precious. Every time I think I have a second to spare it slips through my fingers like an Abba song.
Despite my longing for the seconds to pass evermore slowly, time has lived up to its name and passed me by.
This past month has been full of ups and downs, and I’ll be sure to get into all of that.
But first, I wanted to say thank you to all my friend and family who have been supporting me on my journey to launch this podcast. The response has been outstanding and I couldn’t be more grateful to all of you who have been listening and reading. It means the world to me and brings me the most joy.
I released 6 podcasts this month (including the one posted on Oct 31st, lol) and the response was been tremendous.
The first episode was just me and a microphone introducing the audience to what they can expect from the podcast for future episodes. Check it out here!
The second episode was with my friend Brian and we chopped it up. It gave me an opportunity to explain some of the backend ideas I have for the podcast and where I see it going in the future. Check it out here!
The third and fourth episodes were actually a two part series detailing some of the musical talents by my friend and multi-instrumentalist Green Bean, aka Mike. At the end of the podcast he actually ended up writing us a new intro song! Check out the podcasts here and here and check him out on Instagram @GreenBeanMusic!
The fifth episode was actually one of my favorites, where I got to share with you all some of the work I’ve been doing on a short film, that I wrote the script for and it will be turned into a movie in spring 2023! This was actually the first part of an ongoing series where I am documenting the steps it takes to create a short film from writing, to pre-production, to post-production, promotion, and release! I am so excited to share this journey with you all. Check out part one here!
The sixth episode we released featured both Brian and Michael, and we discussed Brian’s efforts as he embarked on a journey to learn a second language. This ended up being one of my favorite podcasts we’ve recorded so far! There is a lot of subjects covered and it is certainly worth the listen! Check it out here!
Even over the short time this podcast has been in production it has evolved substantially. I originally wanted this to be a place I could document my journey on becoming a screen writer, and I am still doing that, however, it has evolved to the point where I am now showcasing the lives of everyday people, average joe’s, who are working to improve themselves in whatever why they can. The goals of this is to inspire those listening to take steps in their own lives to improve themselves. What is great about this podcast is we are not talking from a point of authority, we are just trying to figure it out – and hopefully that will inspire people to take the first step toward figuring it out.
Whenever I watch or listen to a podcast that is highlighting professionals that are already very successful in their field, I find myself getting discouraged and I don’t think I’m alone in that. So, I figured if I want to be successful and don’t want to be discouraging or wait until I’m a success to start this podcast, why don’t I just start it now and document the process? Makes sense to me, so I’m running with it.
I guess that’s enough podcast talk. Let’s move on to some SCREENPLAY UPDATES!
Yeah, November was rough for screen writing. Honestly, I should be finished with my second act by now if I want to finish my screenplay by December, and I can say that I am nowhere near that goal. I am still in the middle of my first act.
Now, I think it would be easy to be disappointed with my progress, and I am, but I it’s important to put these types of missed milestones in perspective. I’ve written a lot over the couples weeks, much more than I have in the last few years – and I am incredibly proud of that. Not all of it has been in service of this specific screenplay I am working on now, but they were screenplays, just not screenplays for features, which is what I want to be writing.
I’m not going to spill the beans on everything I’ve written over the last few months, I’m saving that for next month’s blog post, but it’s not unimpressive, I guess.
That’s why I’m not being so hard on myself, I guess. It’s because I’m a busy guy working on tons of projects trying to balance professional life and personal life all together.
In fact, as I’m writing this I am actually on vacation in Virginia for the Thanksgiving holiday, and being home has been amazing! It’s also come with new routines, new people to see, and it is difficult balancing it all.
I think I said this, or something to the same effect, at the end of one of the podcasts this week – but it’s important to keep your passion projects and work in perspective. If you miss a goal or a deadline, don’t be too hard on yourself. We are busy people, juggling lots of stuff, so missing a deadline here and there will not cause the world to fall. Keep your chin up, and keep going. It’s about the journey, and I am having the best time!
Alright with that, I’m going to jump back on writing this screenplay.
I wish everyone the best of luck with whatever projects you’re working on! Keep at it – you can do it – I believe in you! :D
I guess if you’ve made it this far then you won’t mind a shameless plug :)
